Island sizing and spacing (the numbers that prevent regret)

A beautiful island that blocks movement will make your kitchen feel smaller, not bigger. As a rule of thumb, plan generous clearance around the island so two people can pass comfortably, and consider how dishwasher and oven doors open into walkways. When space is tight, a peninsula or a smaller island with seating on one side can deliver 90% of the benefit with far less congestion.
