Step 4: Waterproofing: the part you *won’t* see (but it matters most)

Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. A shower’s performance comes from the waterproofing system underneath.

A properly built shower typically includes:

  • correct slope toward the drain
  • a waterproofing system (membrane or equivalent)
  • careful sealing at penetrations (valves, niches, benches)
  • attention to transitions (floor-to-wall, curb details, corners)

If you’re creating a “wet room” feel, waterproofing details become even more critical.(See also: roofing in San Diego)
